Important Notice Regarding Property Tax Reform Dear Taxpayer:
Paying taxes is never easy. However, it is important to realize the dollars collected from property taxes help support vital services such as our schools, parks, roads and libraries. As tax collector, it is my statutory responsibility to collect and distribute property taxes and non ad valorem assessments. In addition, we are responsible for preparing and mailing the tax notices. These tax notices are based on the tax rolls prepared by the Property Appraiser.
I feel as a public servant, it is my duty to be proactive in the educational process - a process that my office takes very seriously. My staff and I believe that it is a key priority to ensure that you, the taxpayer, are informed of changes made by the Florida Legislature when it comes to taxes.
In June 2007, the Legislature initiated property tax reform efforts to reduce property taxes in future years. This effort is referred to as the tax rollback. The rollback requires taxing districts to maintain their 2007 tax rate at 2006 levels. As a result, some homesteaded property owners may notice a slight decrease in their 2007 taxes. However, some non-homesteaded properties may not see a decrease in this year's taxes.
The Legislature continues to examine property tax reform, which may require property owners to make an informed decision regarding the advantages and disadvantages of any future proposals that may affect their annual property taxes. We will continue to provide you with the latest updates and information as it develops. Sincerely,
